The Society was
founded in 1941 by Gertrude Lamson with the objective "to promote,
improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of
the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of
public concerts and recitals". For over 60 years, it has been
responsible for performances in Haywards Heath and district of live
music covering a wide spectrum of musical styles, and displaying the
talents of artists ranging from gifted amateurs, through aspiring young
professionals to established names such as Peter Katin, Emma Johnson,
Margaret Fingerhut, Steven Osborne, Evelyn Glennie, Freddie Kempff and
John Amis. Groups including the Rasumovsky and Coull string quartets,
the Haffner Wind Ensemble and The Fairer Sax have also appeared. An
annual event is the Young Musicians' Showcase, which gives the cream of
local young performers the opportunity to demonstrate their musical
talents in public. Many of these performers have gone on to careers in
professional music, including recently Alexis White, Pavlos Carvalho
and Caroline Tyler.
The new season of
concerts is fast approaching, and once again, we hope we have lined up
a tempting selection of performers for you to enjoy. Two evenings will
feature the return of established favourites: the Mid Sussex Baroque
Ensemble, and pianist Nadia Giliova, accompanied this time by singer
Lola Toursunova for a St. Valentine's Day recital. The season is
bracketed by two outstanding international solo pianists, Young-Choon
Park and Sasha Grynyuk, and to add variety we have four "Young Singers
of the Future", courtesy of the Ardingly International Music School,
plus a French horn recital. Do come along to as many of these concerts
as you can, the standard will be extremely high, and a great musical
experience is assured.
